What is the JAG Interview exam?

The Judge Advocate General's (JAG) Department is the legal branch of the Indian Army. It deals with military-related disciplinary cases and litigation and assists in providing legal assistance to the army in human rights matters and the rule of law among other things. The department consists of legally qualified Army officers who are educated in military law and provide legal help to the military in all aspects. The department supports the Judge Advocate General who is the legal and judicial chief of India and advises the Chief of the Army Staff on legal matters. The JAG's Department is also responsible for emerging fields of military law such as those related to cyber laws, space laws, terrorism, and human rights violations.] The service rendered in the JAG's Department is considered to be Judicial service as per the regulations for the Indian Army.

 

Selection

Every year the Indian Army releases a notification for law graduates between the ages of 21 and 27 for Short Service Commission to the department of JAG. Requirements include an LLB degree and eligibility for registration with the Bar Council of India. There are only ten posts in total, seven for men and three for women. The Directorate General of Recruiting is part of the selection process.

Induction training

Selected candidates will go through 49 weeks of pre-commission training at the Officers Training Academy (OTA), Chennai. On successful completion, candidates will be awarded a 'Post Graduate Diploma in Defence Management and Strategic Studies by the University of Madras.

Deployment

After the grant of commission and basic training, the law graduates are attached to infantry units at border locations and function like their fellow soldiers. This two-year exposure is intended to inculcate the practical aspects of military law, and exposure to military routine is important to understand the future impacts their military orders may have.

Indian Army JAG Eligibility Criteria

JAG Stands for Judge Advocate General Branch, It is the legal branch of the Indian Army. It deals with the Indian Army, Indian Air Force, and Indian Army-related disciplinary cases and prove legal assistance to the army in human rights matters and the rule of law among other things. Indian Army JAG Course Selection Procedure

  • Shortlisting of Applications: The candidates are shortlisted by MoD (Army). After shortlisting of applications, the Centre allotment will be intimated to candidates via their email.
  • Aspirants have to visit the official website and select their SSB dates which are available on a first-come-first-serve basis initially.
  • Candidates will be tested by the two-stage selection procedure
  • Those who clear Stage I will continue to Stage II. Those who fail on stage I will be returned on the same day. The duration of the SSB interview is 05 days.
  • Candidates recommended by the SSB and declared medically fit, will be issued a joining letter for training after the declaration of merit list.

JAG SSB Interview Selection Process

The JAG SSB Interview for the JAG Entry exam is held 5 days in a row. Candidates who pass the written exam are invited to the SSB interview. During these five days, candidates are tested on a variety of parameters.

SSB Interview Day 1: Screening Process

The 1st day of the SSB Interview comprises different Tests. They are discussed below:

1. OIR (Officer Intelligence Rating Test) - Paper 1 and Paper 2

OIR Tests are conducted with two banks of questions covering both verbal and nonverbal reasoning. Candidates had to write their answers down in the past, however, today OMR sheets are provided for marking the solutions. The number of questions in each set and the time permitted for each set vary, so pay close attention to the instructor's pre-test briefing.

2. PP&DT (Picture Perception & Description Test) 

First, candidates will be shown a picture (mainly blurry/hazy) for 30 seconds, after which they will have one minute to report their observations, including the number of characters, their genders, their moods, and the action that is occurring in the picture. Then they will have four and a half minutes to compose a tale based on their findings.

3. Group Discussion (GD)

The batch is divided into groups of 10 to 15 aspirants, and each aspirant must share their experience before the group can come to a decision.

SSB Interview Day 2: Psychological Tests

1. Thematic Apperception Test (TAT)

Candidates are given 4 minutes to construct a story after being shown 12 photos, 1 of which is blank. The time restriction is put in place to assess each Aspirant's innate response.

2. Word Association Test (WAT)

The Aspirants are required to jot down a sentence that comes to mind when they see each of the 60 words that are presented to them for 15 seconds at a time.

3. Situation Reaction Test (SRT)

A booklet is given to the Aspirants with 60 real-life situations; they must write their reactions to those situations. The total duration of this exercise is 30 minutes.

4. Self-Description Test (SDT)

Candidates must provide a brief self-description of the context in a few paragraphs. Write about your parents', instructors', friends', and other people's opinions as well as the traits you want to cultivate. This test has a 15-minute time limit.

SSB Interview Day 3: Group Testing Officers Tests

1. Group Discussion (GD)

The GTO first presents two themes for the first GD, from which the group selects one before exchanging opinions. The GTO provides a topic for the second GD, after which the same process is repeated. The group does not need to reach a decision in this instance.

2. Group Planning Exercise (GPE)

Using a map of the location, the GTO describes a situation where there are a number of issues. The candidates then have 10 minutes to write their solutions using all of their resources, including their group. The group then confers a strategy for resolving the issues, which is then described by one of the participants.

3. Progressive Group Task (PGT)

This challenge consists of four different obstacle courses, each of which gets harder as it goes along. The group is expected to proceed and take on these buildings utilizing their available aid, such as a rope, plank, balli, etc. There is also a load that needs to be carried. The group is required to abide by all GTO guidelines, which include:

(a) Rule of Color

  • White refers to both people and things.
  • Blue denotes a guy only.
  • Red is off-limits to everyone.

(b) The ground is off-limits to everyone.

(c) Rigidity Rule: Helping materials may be attached to the structures but not to one another.

(d) Rule Of Infinity: The start and end lines extend to infinity i.e can’t be crossed directly 

(e) Distance Rule: No distance greater than  4 feet can be jumped.

4. Group Obstacle Race (GOR)/ Snake Race

A sprint across four obstacles, including a single ramp jump, eight-shaped bars, a 10-foot wall, a double wall, a spider web, and an enormous slide, is one of the most enjoyable activities in the entire procedure. Red should not be touched by either a snake or my man, JAGording to the guidelines. When navigating obstacles, the snake must be handled by a minimum of three people, and the GTO may apply a time penalty for infractions.

5. Half Group Task (HGT)

Similar To PGT, But With Only Two People In The Group And One Obstacle To Overcome.

 

SSB Interview Day 4: Personal Interview

1. Lecturette

The lecturette is a test of your self-assurance in front of a group of onlookers. Each officer is responsible for leading his men, inspiring them, and explaining the strategy. For this, you need to speak and sing with assurance. The SSB panel administers a test in GTO known as the lectures to verify all of these.

2. Individual Obstacles (IO)

The candidate must successfully navigate all 10 obstacles, each of which will provide a different score as displayed on them. The candidate may repeat the challenges, but only once he has cleared all 10. The 10 tasks are shown below with their respective scores.

3. Command Task (CT)

The GTO calls each task candidate, in turn, selecting them at random, before asking them a series of questions and outlining a task resembling the PGT. Then he requests that the commander who is up for the job contact two of his team members as subordinates to assist him in getting past the obstruction.

4. Final Group Task (FGT)

As suggested by the name, the entire group is again given one obstacle that is comparable to PGT, which they must clear together.

5. Personal Interview (PI)

Any of the three days, following the conclusion of the examinations for that day, may be used for the personal interview. The interviewing officer asks the student a variety of questions about his family, academics, involvement in sports and extracurricular activities, hobbies and interests, responsibilities, and general knowledge including knowledge of the forces, personal life, etc. based on information provided by the student in his PIQ (Personal Information Questionnaire). 

The average interview lasts for 40 minutes, while some may go for an hour or even just 5 minutes.

 

JAG SSB Interview Day 5: Conference Day

The Final Day is the Conference Day in the 5-Day JAG SSB Interview. The assessor gives a final address before the conference of aspirants gets underway. All the officers who evaluated the Aspirants the previous days attend a board session that is held. Each assessor talks amongst themselves about a candidate's suitability.

The committee then makes recommendations after each Aspirant makes an individual appearance before the board and their overall evaluation is described. Situations are presented to the borderline Aspirants, and a group decision is made. The shortlisted applicants are kept on after the outcome is revealed for additional medical exams.

Pertaining to the SSB Marking System, each of the three assessors will evaluate the medical test, the group task, and the personal interview for a total of 300 marks (PI). A minimum score of 90 is required from each assessor. The SSB consists of 900 total points. It Is Also Divided Into 4 Parts (Psychology, GTO, Interview, And Conference Round), Giving Each Test Phase 900/4=225 Marks. Out of these 225 marks, you must receive at least 90 in order for either of the assessors to say "Yes," while scoring less than 90 simply results in a "No."

Screening, psychological tests, GTO tasks, and a personal interview are all part of the initial four days of the SSB interview process. In this case, you would need to pass with at least 90*3= 270 marks. For Example -

1) One applicant receives 80 points for the interview, 70 for the GTO, and 75 for the psychological test. The final score is 225 points.

2) A different contender receives a total of 250 out of the necessary 270 marks. Thus, the significance of the conference round is now apparent. If your marks are higher than 240, the conference round will determine whether or not you are recommended.

Complete Marking Scheme For JAG SSB Interview

A minimum of 90 points must be obtained from each assessor. SSB has a total of 900 points. It is then divided into four parts (psychology, GTO, interview, and conference round), with each test phase receiving 900/4=225 marks.

JAG SSB Marking Scheme: Points To Be Noted 

  • The Services Selection Board has backup marks of 225, and they began probing you in the conference round because they thought you were lacking in several areas. 
  • If they deem you fit, they will award you points to raise your cumulative score from the previous 240 to 360 or above (marks As Mentioned Above). 
  • As a result, you receive a minimum passing score of 360 (90X4). Furthermore, you get finally recommended.
  • If an assessor is uncertain about the evaluation of an applicant during the psychology test, he might consult another assessor. The GTO or the IO cannot use the option of getting a second opinion because they must evaluate a candidate's OLQs in real-time.
  • If someone is on the verge of receiving a third assessment but is recommended by two assessors, a review is conducted during a conference. In any event, if a psychologist does not deem someone suitable, they are not at all suggested.
  • All of these aspects of your personality are put together on the day of the conference to determine whether or not the applicant is qualified to serve as an officer in the armed forces.
  • Therefore, developing your thinking is the key to getting high marks. The SSB's selection procedure is based on methodologies that evaluate candidates in light of the needs of the armed services. As a result, practice diligently and get ready for each SSB phase.

  • Matriculation or Equivalent Certificate for verification of your date of birth. [Certificates issued by the board concerned (CBSE/State Boards/ICSE)/ admit Card/ Mark sheet/ Transfer/ Leaving Certificate etc in which date of birth is reflected are not acceptable proof of date of birth.] 
  • Marks Sheet of Matriculation or equivalent. 
  • Intermediate/ 10+2 pass certificate.

A declaration to this effect needs to be filled and submitted by the candidates at the time of the SSB interview,
  • No Claim Certificate. 
  • Valid Proof of Identity with photograph - Aadhaar Card/ PAN Card/ Voter ID Card/ Passport. (m) Certificate for Not Having Duplicate Profiles/Registration IDs
  • For Candidates from Universities Following CGPA/ Grades System:- 
    • (i) Conversion Certificate regarding formulae for conversion of CGPA/ Grades into marks as followed by the University. 
    • (ii) Self-Certified Declaration Certificate (Aggregate Percentage) regarding aggregate percentage obtained. 
  • In Case Original Documents are Submitted for Pursuing Higher Studies. Candidates are required to bring a Bonafide cum Custodian Certificate on original letterhead duly signed by the Principal/ Head of the institution where the documents have been submitted. 
  • Candidates Of Final Year/ Semester Of Graduation Degree Course should be able to furnish the proof of passing to the Directorate General of Recruiting by 01 Apr 2019 and produce the graduation degree certificate either before or within 12 weeks of commencement of the Course at the Training Academy. Such candidates are required to bring the following documents:-
