What is an SSB Interview?

The Service Selection Board was set up to test the capability, and evaluate the personality and eligibility of aspiring defence aspirants. The core principle of SSB has been derived from the mantra of Mansa, Vacha, and Karmana, and candidates are tested on these traits. Mansa means thoughts  , Vacha means speech, and Karmana menas deeds or actions. In the SSB 5 days Procedure, A  battery of Psychological Tests, Interviews, And Group TEsts are conducted to evaluate the3 qualities of the candidates. Along  with these traits, specific officer Like Qualities are expected to be present in candidates to get recommended by SSB. We have talked about these qualities below.

 

SSB Interview Procedure 

The Interview spans for  4-5 days during which various tests are conducted to test the qualities and personality of the candidates . SSB Interview has a pattern and procedure where the tests are conducted in  a manner so as to reflect the actual personality and psychology  of the candidate. There are certain established qualities in the Indian Armed Forces Called the Officer Like Qualities (OLQs) which are usually looked for in a candidate during this interview. So the five day procedure is an attempt by the Selection Board to observe the candidate and scrutinize theri every quality to see if they have the required (OLQs). 

 

Entry to SSB Interview 

Candidates who have appeared for the NDA, CDS,CAPF,AFCAT,ACC,TA,INET AND Direct Entries have to appear for the SSB Interview once they qualify for the written test of the aforementioned exam. Apart from these, candidates have to appear for SSB for entries like JAG i.e is Judge Advocate General, Territorial Army, Technical Short Service Commission Course, Non- Technical Short Service Commission Courses, IAF’s Meteorology Branch Course, Navy’s Executive and Technical Branch Entry , Coast Guard Navy’s Pilot/Observer  Entry, and Navy’s Education Branch Entry.

 

SSB Interview Call Letter

The Service Selection Board (SSB) Call Letter is a dream Letter for every defence aspirant. It brings the candidates a step closer to their  dream of joining the Indian Armed Forces. The SSB Call Letter is issued only to the aspirants who have qualified in the first round of selection of the respective exam like NDA, CDS, AFCAT,ACC,TA etc. and the aforementioned open entries. 

The contents of the SSB Call Letter may be as per the organization. The General contents of the SSB Call Letter are :


 

  •  Applicant’s  Roll Number 
  • Registration Number 
  • Applicant’s Name 
  • Reporting SSB Centre 
  • Reporting Time 
  • General Instructions 
  • Required Documents to be carried by the candidates
  • Requisites to be carried by the candidates
  • Boarding and Lodging details

 

Reporting Day 

Reporting Day when candidates have to report at theri mentioned SSB Centre. For some exams,  Like the NDA Exam, the reporting and Screening day are treated as one  . Hence , Candidates need to check their call letters and report accordingly.

Candidates can report to the SSB Centre directly or can also report a day earlier to the Movement Control Officer (MCO) and from there, they are taken to the SSB Centre by Military vehicles.

After this , Candidates are allotted their temporary chest number. Candidates are addressed by respective chest numbers by the official at the SSB Center.

Screening Process 

Dress Code : Formal Dress All the Candidates will report to the SSB Gate or railway stations as mentioned in the call letter and after verification or documents will be allotted chest number. They will then be given breakfasts and taken for the testing.

First would be the Officer Intelligence Rating (OIR) Tests which comprise of two sets of question bank verbal and non verbal reasoning. Earlier candidates had  to write their responses, but nowaday OMR sheets are given to mark the responses. Every set has a different number of questions and the time allotted also varies so listen very carefully to the instructors briefing before the test.

After that PPDT i.e Picture Prediction and Description Test will start. This test takes solace in two parts: first the perception part and then the discussion . In the first part candidates will be shown a picture for 30 seconds then in the next one minute will be given to them to write a story revolving around their observations.

With completion of this test candidates are taken out of the auditorium, have snacks and then sorted into groups as their chest number. Then one by one groups are called for Discussion Test, 

Psychological Test

Candidates who make it to the second day of the 5 days Procedure i the SSB Interview, Come one step  closer to their dream. On the second day, candidates are subjected to a battery of Psychological Tests The psychological test battery includes tests like.

  • Thematic Apperception Test (TAT)
  • Word Association Test (WAT)
  • Situation Reaction (SRT)
  • Self - Description Test (SD)

Thematic Apperception Test (TAT)

In this round, candidates are shown 12 pictures. 11 pictures are hazy while the last picture/ slide is blank. Each picture is displayed only for 30 Seconds and then the next slide appears. In the end, the  blank slide appears inviting the candidates to write a stroy of their own in just 4 minutes. This round is one of the most significant rounds  of the psychological test. Candidates have to write the stories using the facts, ideas and assumptions that come to their mind.

Word Association Test (WAT)

In this round, 60 words are displayed on the screen for 15 seconds each.Candidates are required to write a sentence that comes to their mind immediately after seeing the word. Likewise, they have to write 60 sentences.

Situation Reaction Test (SRT)

The Situation Reaction Test is one of the most important tests in SSB,SRT is designed to test a candidate's reaction in certain given situations. This tests the candidates' personality and gives the actual picture of their conscious and subconscious mind. Having a strong mindset and quick decision - making skill is one of the most important skills required in an officer and SRT tsts tha same. In the Situation Reaction TEst, Candidates are given a booklet containing 60 different situations , and candidates have to write their responses to them in 30 minutes.

Self - Description Test (SD)

In the test of the 5 day SSB interview interview procedure, candidates have to write about the opinion of their parents, teachers, friends , colleagues, etc . About them. What do the candidates think about themselves, their  strengths and weaknesses, these types of questions are asked. The motie of this test is to examine  how well the candidates are in front of the other person. Candidates  should avoid writing any sentences or fase paradise themselves.

GTO (Ground Tasks Obstacle)

On the third and fourth day the GTO tasks are done to determine the suitable candidate GTO (Group Testing Officer) is the most powerful person in the SSB interview because he will spend two days testing the abilities of candidates . GTO testing divided . into Following tasks-:

  • Group Discussion (GD)
  • Group Planning Exercise (GPE)
  • Progressive Group Task (PGT)
  • Group Obstacle Race (GOR)
  • Half Group Task (HGT)
  • Lecturatte 
  • Individual Obstacles
  • Command task.
  • Final Group Task.

Conference

D-day of the SSB interview On this day the candidate is called for the conference for verification by the panel and after this the result is announced.

A personal interview round is also organized on any day between the second to the fourth day. The interviewing officers are a top senior officer like Colonel or Brigadier
