Admiral Sunil Lanba, a former chief of the naval staff of India, has received the Pingat Jasa Gemilang (Tentera), also known as the Meritorious Service Medal (Military) (MSM(M)), from President Halimah Yacob.

The Indian Navy and the Republic of Singapore Navy have a strong and long-standing bilateral defence cooperation, which was strengthened by Lanba’s excellent contributions on Thursday.

Ng Eng Hen, Singapore’s Minister of Defense, gave Lanba the honour during an investiture at the Ministry of Defense (MINDEF).

According to a statement released by the government, “Under Lanba’s leadership, both navies concluded the Bilateral Agreement for Navy Cooperation in November 2017 and the Implementing Arrangement for Mutual Coordination, Logistics and Services Support in June 2018, which established the framework for increased Navy-to-Navy interactions and expanded collaboration in areas of mutual interest like submarine rescues, maritime-security information-sharing, and logistics support.

Both navies celebrated the silver anniversary of the Singapore-India Maritime Bilateral Exercise in 2018 with Lanba’s assistance, and the inaugural Singapore-India-Thailand Maritime Exercise (SITMEX) was successfully completed in September 2019, according to the statement.

“It is an honour for me to have been granted the MSM(M) by the Government of Singapore,” ADM (retired) Lanba remarked after collecting the medal.

Indian Navy Singapore Relations

The two navies of India and Singapore have a long history of strong ties as maritime neighbours and are strategic allies. During my time in the office, I made steps to advance the engagement process and strengthen the bond between our fleets.

The two Navies’ very clear decision to proceed in this direction, he continued, gives him “great comfort.”

While in Singapore until September 10, Lanba also visited Dr Ng, Chief of Defence Force Lieutenant-General Melvyn Ong, and Chief of Navy Rear-Admiral Aaron Beng. He also viewed the Guard of Honour at MINDEF.
