Lt.Gen Bansi Ponnappa was appointed a new Deputy Chief of Army Staff

Lieutenant General Bansi Ponnappa has taken over the charge of Deputy Chief of Army Staff of the Indian Army. He has served as the commander of the XI Corps.

Ponnappa was drafted into the 2nd Battalion, Mahar Regiment in June 1985. He commanded a company that fought insurgents in Manipur. He attended Defence Services Staff College, Wellington. He then served as brigade commander of an independent armoured brigade.

In 2012, Ponnappa was sent from India to Goma in the Democratic Republic of the Congo as part of the UN peacekeeping force. Ponnappa served under Brazilian General League Carlos Alberto Dos Santos Cruz and its predecessor Indian Lieutenant General Chander Prakash as a power maker in March 2013.

Promoted to the rank of major general, Ponnappa assumed command of the 28th Infantry Division at Gurez. As a lieutenant general, he was chief of staff of the northern command. He then took command of the IX as COG. Corps and resigned on February 10, 2022.
