First Indigenously Built Corvette INS Khukri Decommissioned

In recent news, the INS Khurki was decommissioned after 32 year and this is going to be terned into a museum. The ship was commissioned in Mumbai in presence of Krishna Chandra Pant, the former defence minister, and Sudha Mulla, wife of late Captain Mahendra Nath Mulla.

Captain Mahendra Nath Mulla was the ship’s commander during the War of 1971. He decided to go down with the ship.

During her service, the INS Khukri was commanded by 28 officers and traveled more than 6,44,897 nautical miles, equivalent to 30 times the circumnavigation of the world or three times the distance between the earth and the moon.

Khukri is to be turned into a museum by the Diu administration for public visits. The museum will be built next to the existing Khukri memorial, which will also house the scaled-down version of the first INS Khukri (F149), a Blackwood-class anti-submarine frigate. .

On this occasion, Admiral Bhave expressed to the Administrator his deep appreciation for this initiative to start the journey home for INS Khukri. He also referred to the sacrifice of Captain Mahendra Nath Mulla, MVC, and the brave men of the 1st INS Khukri, to whom the large Diu memorial is dedicated.

This boat sank on the coast of DIU, Gujarat, from the submarine of Pakistan on 9 December in December 1971 during the India Pakistani War 1971.
