DRDO Successfully tests Medium Range Surface to Air Missile (MRSAM)

On March 27, 2022, the Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO) successfully performed two flight tests of the Indian Army’s Medium Range Surface to Air Missile (MRSAM) for two distinct ranges.

The tests were carried out at the Integrated Test Range at Chandipur, which is located off the coast of Odisha. Flight testing was conducted using the armament system in its deliverable configuration.

DRDO and Israel Aerospace Industries collaborated to develop the Medium Range Surface to Air Missile system (IAI).

Key Highlight of MRSAM Missile:-

  1. The Medium Range Surface to Air Missile testing was conducted in conjunction with live fire demonstrations against high-speed aerial targets.
  2. The first test involves intercepting a target at a medium altitude and a lengthy distance.
  3. The second test consisted of a low-altitude, short-range target.
  4. The two missiles intercepted and utterly destroyed the targets, reporting direct strikes at both ranges.
  5. The missiles were developed in collaboration between DRDO and Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) for the Indian Army.
  6. A mobile launcher system, multi-function radar, and other vehicles compose the Medium Range Surface to Air Missile armament system.
  7. The system’s performance was confirmed using flight data recorded by range sensors such as electro-optical tracking systems, radars, and telemetry.
