CISF Celebrates 53rd Raising Day on 6 March

Home Minister Amit Shah praised CISF officers for risking their lives and caring for fellow Indians returning from overseas during the coronavirus outbreak. Mr Shah stated that many CISF members have died in the service of the nation. According to Mr. Shah, CISF officers are also caring for returning Ukrainian people as part of Operation Ganga.

Mr Shah stated at the 53rd Raising Day event of the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) in Ghaziabad that 2.5 trillion dollars in economic activity would not have been feasible without the service of the CISF.

He encouraged the CISF to create a five-year vision because the private sector would expand dramatically and India will become a $5 trillion economy.

The Home Minister described the multi-skilled CISF as the world’s only industrial security force, saying it protects highly sensitive sites, ports, nuclear reactors, and airports. Mr Shah also praised the CISF’s efforts in tree-planting campaigns.

The President’s police medals were also presented by the Home Minister for exemplary service.

According to CISF DG Sheel Vardhan Singh, the force plays a vital part in the country’s growth by being at the forefront of security at space and atomic energy centres, ports, airports, and Metro lines.

Mr Singh stated that the CISF secures around 30 lakh people in the Delhi Metro and 10 lakh passengers in airports throughout the country.

Work of CISF:

• The CISF protects 354 units, including 65 domestic and international airports, and provides fire protection to 104 industrial activities.

• It has evolved into the country’s top multi-skilled security organisation, tasked with providing security to the country’s key vital infrastructure facilities in a variety of locales, including terrorist and Naxal-infested areas.

• CISF currently provides security for atomic power plants, space installations, defence production units, mines, oil fields and refineries, major seaports, heavy engineering/steel plants, fertiliser units, airports, hydroelectric/thermal power plants, sensitive government buildings and heritage monuments (including the Taj Mahal and the Red Fort), and important private sector units.

• CISF is one of the country’s major providers of Fire Protection Services. It covers 104 Public Sector Undertakings with fire protection and safety. The fire wing is an essential component of the CISF, and it is supervised by professionally qualified professionals with science and technical backgrounds. In 1970, the first fire wing unit was established at Fertilizer and Chemical Travancore (FACT), Kochi, with a sanctioned strength of 53 employees. The CISF is the only Central Armed Police Force with a full-fledged fire department.

• In 1999, the CISF was authorised to provide technical and fire consulting services on a fee-for-service basis to organisations in the private sector where the CISF was not stationed.

• Following the hijacking of Indian Airlines Flight IC-814 to Kandahar in 2000, the CISF was given the specialised responsibility of airport security. Since then, the Force has been stationed in 64 airports around the country.

• In 2007, the CISF was accepted into the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC). DMRC is the CISF’s biggest unit and a Hyper Sensitive Unit.

• The CISF has been tasked with providing protection to VIP protectees of various categories around the country. The VIP Protection Wing of the CISF, known as the Special Security Group (SSG), is in charge of VVIP/VIP security.
