Air Marshal S PRABHAKARAN assumes command of Western Air Command
Air Marshal Sreekumar Prabhakaran has taken command of the Western Air Command, based in Delhi (WAC). On December 22, 1983, the Air Marshal was commissioned into the IAF as a fighter pilot. Air Marshal Prabhakaran has almost 5000 hours of flying experience as an accomplished MiG 21 pilot and a category ‘A’ licenced flight instructor.
Air Marshal S Prabhakaran replaces Air Marshal Amit Dev, who retired from the IAF after more than 39 years of outstanding service on February 28, 2022.
For three years, Air Marshal Prabhakaran led the famed Suryakiran Aerobatic Team. During his tenure, the team participated in over 150 public rallies, including those in Singapore, Bangkok, and Myanmar. The team received the “Unit Citation” from the Chief of Air Staff.
The Air Marshal has held a variety of positions, including command of two flying bases, Senior Directing Staff at DSSC, Wellington, and Commandant of the College of Air Warfare. He served as the Defence Attache in Cairo and was accredited to Cyprus, Djibouti, Ethiopia, and Sudan.
For three years, he was the Assistant Chief of the Air Staff (Intelligence) at Air Headquarters, and then he was Director General (Inspection & Safety). He was also the South Western Air Command’s Senior Air Staff Officer. He was previously the Commandant of the Air Force Academy in Hyderabad.
