Describe the JAG Interview test

The Indian Army's legal division is known as the Judge Advocate General's (JAG) Department. In addition to helping to provide the army with legal support in a variety of areas, including human rights and the rule of law, it also handles military-related disciplinary issues and litigation. Army personnel with legal backgrounds who have received military law training make up the department, which offers comprehensive legal support to the armed forces. The department provides assistance to the Judge Advocate General, who serves as the Chief of the Army Staff's legal advisor and is also India's top legal and judicial official. The JAG's Department is also in charge of new areas of military law, such as those pertaining to terrorism, human rights abuses, space law, and cyber law. According to Indian Army standards, the work done in the JAG's Department qualifies as judicial service.

Selection

Every year, the Indian Army issues a call for law graduates between the ages of 21 and 27 to apply for a Short Service Commission in the JAG department. An LLB degree is required, as is eligibility for registration with the Bar Council of India. There are only ten positions available, with seven for men and three for women. The selection procedure includes the Directorate General of Recruiting.

Induction training

Selected candidates will attend the Officers Training Academy (OTA) in Chennai for 49 weeks of pre-commission training. Candidates who complete the course successfully will be given a 'Post Graduate Diploma in Defence Management and Strategic Studies by the University of Madras.

Deployment

Following commissioning and basic training, law graduates are sent to army units at border locations and act as soldiers. This two-year exposure is meant to instill the practical components of military law, and exposure to military routine is necessary to grasp the potential consequences of military instructions.

Women serving in the Army's legal services

Lt Col Jyoti Sharma became the first woman officer from the JAG's Department to be assigned a foreign deployment in November 2019. She has been appointed as a legal military expert to the Seychelles government.

Colonel Amit Kumar and Colonel Annu Dogra, the first Service JAG, married an Indian Armed Forces couple.
