Indian Coast Guard i.e commonly known as (ICG). The main role of the Indian Coast Guard is to protect the marine borders of the country and assist in the rescue of people at sea. The two major types of entries in the Indian Coast Guard are officers' entry and sailor's entry . The various branches to the officers entry levels include Assistant Commandant - General Duty (GD), Commercial Pilot License, Short Service Appointments, Technical and law entry.  Sailor's entry has three sub-entry levels that includes the Yatrik , Navik General Duty (GD) and Navik Domestic Branch (DB)

Indian Coast Guard holds various national level recruitment exams every year for these posts. The recruitment are solely based on the merit list , as there is no backdoor entry for the Indian Coast Guard recruitment.  Candidates must meet the given eligibility parameters to apply for the examination. 

Indian Coast Guard notification for these exams are released on the official website of Indian Coast Guard i.e (ICG) and the rest of the process is managed online. 

However the examination is conducted offline. 

The selection process includes several phases i.e Written exam , PFT Physical fitness test and Medical examination.

HERE WE DISCUSS THE ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA THAT IS DESCRIBED IN DETAILED BELOW- 

  • NATIONALITY- Candidate should be a citizen of India with the verified documents by Government of India 
  • AGE LIMIT- Candidate age between 18 and 22 years. Candidates must have been born between May 01 2001 to April 30, 2005 both dates are inclusive . Relaxation in the upper age limit of 05 years (SC/ST) and 3 years OBC (non-creamy) are provided to candidates. 
  • EDUCATIONAL QUALIFICATIONS ARE- Passed class 10th from an education board recognised by council for education. 

SYLLABUS OF INDIAN COAST GUARD (DB) DOMESTIC BRANCH i.e The level of the Indian Coast Guard Navik Syllabus is of class 10+2 standards. The written examination includes several bestows topics such as English , Physics , Mathematics, Basic Chemistry, Reasoning, Current affairs and Quantitative Aptitude. 

INDIAN COAST GUARD NAVIK (DB) DOMESTIC BRANCH EXAM PATTERN - 

Indian Coast Guard Navik exam pattern basically divided into five phases.  The exam pattern for each phases described below- 

  • STAGE 1- In stage 1, there are two sections and it is conducted in CBT i.e Computer Based Test or mode . 

Candidates who have opted for NAVIK (DB) are required to attempt section I which comprises Maths , Science, English , Reasoning and General knowledge.  The standard of the syllabus is of class 10th standard. Maximum marks allotted to the test is 60. 

  • STAGE 2- Those who qualify the written exam are asked to appear in Stage II that comprises Physical Fitness Test (PFT) , document verification and initial medical exam. The duration of stage II is for one to two days .The PFT consists of Running, Squat-ups and Push ups . In the document verification all the original documents such as grade of 10 and 12 , photo identity card including the caste certificate etc are verified. In the Medical Examination the medical board may put the candidates as permanently unfit or temporarily unfit. 
  • STAGE 3-  It comprises final document verification and initial medical exam at INS Chilka. Duration of this stage is one to two days. 
  • STAGE 4-  Candidate who clear stage III and stand in merit as per the vacancies avail are provisionally shortlisted for the training at INS Chilka.

TRAINING - 

The basic training for Navik (Domestic Branch)will be conducted at INS Chilka followed by sea training and professional training in the allotted trade. Branch/ trade will be allocated as per the requirement of service and performance during basic training. Basic training at INS Chilka will cover the following Subjects:

Academic and service subjects.

Sports activities

Outdoor training such as Parade Training, Sailing, Boat Pulling, Swimming, Trekking, Cross-Country, Firing etc.

Service-oriented activities including maintenance of equipment, living spaces and training areas etc.

Duration of Training- 

Navik (Domestic Branch) – 16 weeks 

On completion of basic training at INS Chilka, the trainee will undergo professional and sea training for a period of 06 months to 2 years or as decided by ICG.

Navik (DB) are liable to be discharged as UNSUITABLE if their progress (including academic) or conduct is unsatisfactory at any time during training. Trainees are also liable to be discharged at any stage of training if their online application or the documents are found to be falsified at any stage of recruitment.

  • Navik (DB) Cook: You have to prepare veg as well as non-veg food as per the menu listed by the Indian Coast Guard. You need to perform weekly accounting of food ration.
  • Navik (DB) Steward: You will be tasked with serving the food in the Indian Coast Guard’s Canteen/Mess. Perform chores related to housekeeping, waiter, maintenance, etc. You need to perform accounting of funds associated with food as well.

Indian Coast Guard Navik DB Career Growth and Promotion- 

With consistency in performance during your time as a Navik Domestic Branch Officer, you will receive periodical promotions up to the rank of Pradhan Adhikari. The basic pay of Pradhan Adhikari is Rs. 47,600 (Pay level 8) along with Dearness Allowance.

Salary Structure of Indian Coast Guard Navik DB- 

 The salary of the Navik DB officer is as per 7th Commission pay and hence, the basic pay is Rs. 21,700. Therefore, as per the government norms, you will receive the basic pay of Rs. 21,700 along with grade pay of Rs. 1900 as your basic salary.

THE SALARY OF THE INDIAN COAST GUARD (DB) DOMESTIC BRANCH IS DESCRIBED BELOW- 

After joining, a Navik in Indian Coast Guard will be entitled to get a basic pay of INR 21,700 plus Dearness Allowance and Other Allowance. 

A Navik can be promoted up to the Pradhan Adhikari with a pay scale of 47,600 with Dearness Allowance 

Apart from basic pay and allowances a Navik is entitled to get free ration, clothing, Medical treatments, Government accommodation for self and family on a nominal rate, canteen and various loan facilities. 

After retirement, they can avail of ECHS Medical Facilities.
