Age Restrictions

Candidates born between the 16th of January and the 29th of December will be considered for this position.

If an applicant passes all phases of the Selection Procedure, the maximum age at the time of enrollment is 21 years.

Physical Fitness Examination

A 1.6-kilometer run will be finished in 06 minutes and 30 seconds. To qualify for the Physical Fitness Test, candidates must additionally execute 10 push-ups, 10 sit-ups, and 20 squats in the allotted time.

Adaptability Test-I (For both Group 'X' and Group 'Y' Trades) - All candidates who pass the Physical Fitness Test (PFT) must take the Adaptability Test-I (objective type written test) to determine a candidate's suitability for employment in the IAF, which includes deployment in a variety of geographic terrain, weather, and operational conditions.

Adaptability Test- 2 (For both Group 'X' and Group 'Y' Trades) - As per current policy, all candidates who pass the Adaptability Test- I must take the Adaptability Test- II. The purpose of the Adaptability Test- II is to select individuals who can adapt to the environment of the Indian Air Force and acclimatize to military life.

Medical Fitness Test

(i) Height

  • 152.5 cms is the minimum allowable height.
  • 165 cm is the minimum permissible height for IAF(P) trade (For NE and Hill States) and 175 Cm (For other States) (For other States)
  • Minimum permissible height for the Auto Tech trade is -162.5 cms (for the Northeast and the Hill States) or 165 cms (For other States)

(ii) Chest: 5 cm

iii) Weight-Proportionate to age and height. However, only the Operations Assistant (ATS) trade requires a minimum weight of 55 kg.

(iv) Corneal Surgery-(PRK/LASIK) is not acceptable.

(v) Hearing-The candidate should have normal hearing, which means that he or she should be able to hear a forced whisper from a distance of 6 meters with each ear separately.

(vi) Dental-Healthy gums, a good set of teeth, and a minimum of 14 dental points are required.

(vii) General Health-The candidate should have normal anatomy with no missing appendages. He should be free of any active or latent medical or surgical handicap, infection, or skin disorders, whether acute or chronic. The candidate must be physically and mentally fit to execute duty in any location throughout the world, in any climate or terrain.

Application Fees For IAF Group X, Y Exam 

The candidate must pay an examination fee of Rs.250/- when registering for the online examination.

The technique for selection-

The three processes that a candidate must go through for ultimate selection in the IAF are as follows.

(a) Phase I: Online Written Test, at a designated location 

(b) Phase II: Physical Fitness Test, AT-I and AT-II Tests At an IAF Airmen Selection Centre

 (c) Phase-III: Medical Fitness Test, an Indian Air Force X, Y Group Exam Pattern Phase I or an Online Written Test will include the portions listed below. The curriculum will be based on the 10+2 system.

Marking scheme for online tests:

 (i) one point for each right answer.

(ii) No points for questions that are not attempted.

(iii) 0.25 points will be removed for each incorrect answer.

Phase II: Candidates must pass each exam in order to be selected. Phase 2 (Document Verification) and an admit card will be emailed to the registered email address. Candidates must bring the documents indicated in the notice pdf.

Medical Examination Phase III

The IAF Group X- Salary A monthly stipend of Rs. 14,600/- would be paid during training. Following completion of training, the commencing gross emoluments will be at the minimum scale of pay, which includes Military Service Pay (MSP), Group 'X' Pay (applicable solely to Group 'X' Trades), and other benefits and Dearness Allowance (DA) will be as follows:-

(a) Trades in Group 'X' (Except Education Instructor Trade). Rs.33,100/- per month plus Dearness Allowance (where applicable), which may increase in subsequent years based on the individual's professional growth.

(a) Group 'Y' [With the exception of IAF(S) and Musician Trades]. Rs. 26,900/- per month plus Dearness Allowance (where applicable), which may increase in subsequent years based on the individual's professional growth.

Selection Procedure for Indian Air Force Groups X and Y

The Indian Air Force conducts the selection procedure for the Indian Air Force examination (IAF). The IAF Group X & Y selection procedure will include three rounds: a written test, a physical fitness test, and a medical test. Candidates must appear and pass all selection rounds to be considered for a position in Group X or Group Y.

The Indian Air Force will evaluate individuals in all fields to determine their suitability for Airmen Group X and Y postings.

  • Candidates must achieve the qualifying marks provided by the Indian Air Force. Airmen Group X and Y selection will be based solely on merit, as well as candidates' performance in previous selection stages.

Except for the English exam, the test will be administered in both English and Hindi. The exam is at the 10+2 level. All disciplines will have a sectional cutoff in addition to an overall cutoff.

Physical Fitness Test for Air Force Groups X and Y in (PFT)

The Indian Air Force requires physical fitness, hence passing the PFT is required. The following are the fitness tests that will be performed:

  • 1.6 km run in 6 min 30 sec
  • 10 Push-ups
  • 20 Squats
  • 10 Sit-ups

It should be noted that there are no marks granted for the PFT; it is merely for qualification purposes.

Adaptation Test-1: Candidates who pass the Physical Fitness Test (PFT) will move on to the adaptability tests, the first of which is the SRT (Situation Reaction Test). A candidate's decision-making and response/reaction are evaluated here. There are 45 SRTs in total, each with a time limit of 30 minutes. This test evaluates an applicant's attitude in response to the qualities established by the defense forces for selecting a candidate of the correct frame of mind.

Adaptability Test-2: Selected applicants attend Group Discussion after passing Adaptability Test 1. This consists of 10-15 applicants sitting in a group and discussing a shared topic.

The subjects are current events and social events. This test assesses a person's knowledge as well as communication skills. Interpersonal abilities such as persuasion are also evaluated.

After passing all of the rounds, those candidates who are shortlisted are given a Test Series that includes the dates and location of the medical examinations.

Airforce Group X & Y: Merit List All candidates who pass the medical are then shortlisted based on their marks, and a merit list is created. Candidates whose names appear on the merit list are given a call letter and enlisted in the Indian Air Force, with Joint Basic Training taking place in Belgavi, Karnataka.

  • Group Y (Medical Assistant Trade Only) - A 10+2/Intermediate / equivalent examination with 50% aggregate in Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and English, as well as 50% aggregate in English.

Notes- Candidates who are eligible for Group X's examination are also eligible for Group Y's examination and have the option of taking both Group X's and Group Y's exams. Diploma holders are only able to apply for Group X trades. Also, rounding off marks/percentages is not permitted, therefore treating 49.99% as 50% is not appropriate
