What is the ACC exam?

The ACC (Army Cadet College) Wing at Indian Military Academy prepares regular army, navy, and air force soldiers, airmen, and sailors for commission as officers in the Indian Army. The ACC is now also referred to as the Siachin battalion.

The training at IMA is designed to maximize the development of intellectual, moral, and physical qualities required for leadership in the armed forces. The IMA instils in its students the qualities of heart and mind, patriotism, dynamism, character, initiative, and understanding that are essential for leadership in both war & peace.

The Army Cadet College Wing, led by a Brigadier rank officer, is the fifth Battalion of the IMA and is located on Tons Campus. It is made up of three companies, each with three platoons, as well as an Academic Department led by a Principal. The latter is divided into departments under the Humanities & Science Streams, with each dept. led by a Professor or Associate Professor.

ACC Selection Process- 

The establishment of ACC decided to run in the mould of NDA, however, entry into ACC was restricted to soldiers serving in the ranks; greater thrust was laid on academics at ACC with an even emphasis on building officer-like qualities in them. The Army Cadet College Wing trains soldiers from the regular army, navy, and air force for commission as officers in the Indian Army. The ACC Exam feeds into the Indian Military Academy and their achievements are all-pervading and showcased in every echelon.

ACC (I & II) Written Exam conducted twice a year by Military Training Directorate to recruit candidates in the Indian Army.

ACC is a two-tier examination, wherein it includes:

ACC SSB-

The ACC SSB for the ACC Entry exam is held 5 days in a row. Candidates who pass the written exam are invited to the SSB interview. During these five days, candidates are tested on a variety of parameters.

SSB Interview Day 1: Screening Process

The 1st day of the SSB Interview comprises different Tests. They are discussed below:

1. OIR (Officer Intelligence Rating Test) - Paper 1 and Paper 2

OIR Tests are conducted with two banks of questions covering both verbal and nonverbal reasoning. Candidates had to write their answers down in the past, however, today OMR sheets are provided for marking the solutions. The number of questions in each set and the time permitted for each set vary, so pay close attention to the instructor's pre-test briefing.

2. PP&DT (Picture Perception & Description Test) 

First, candidates will be shown a picture (mainly blurry/hazy) for 30 seconds, after which they will have one minute to report their observations, including the number of characters, their genders, their moods, and the action that is occurring in the picture. Then they will have four and a half minutes to compose a tale based on their findings.

3. Group Discussion (GD)

The batch is divided into groups of 10 to 15 aspirants, and each aspirant must share their experience before the group can come to a decision.

SSB Interview Day 2: Psychological Tests

1. Thematic Apperception Test (TAT)

Candidates are given 4 minutes to construct a story after being shown 12 photos, 1 of which is blank. The time restriction is put in place to assess each Aspirant's innate response.

2. Word Association Test (WAT)

The Aspirants are required to jot down a sentence that comes to mind when they see each of the 60 words that are presented to them for 15 seconds at a time.

3. Situation Reaction Test (SRT)

A booklet is given to the Aspirants with 60 real-life situations; they must write their reactions to those situations. The total duration of this exercise is 30 minutes.

4. Self-Description Test (SDT)

Candidates must provide a brief self-description of the context in a few paragraphs. Write about your parents', instructors', friends, and other people's opinions as well as the traits you want to cultivate. This test has a 15-minute time limit.

SSB Interview Day 3: Group Testing Officers Tests

1. Group Discussion (GD)

The GTO first presents two themes for the first GD, from which the group selects one before exchanging opinions. The GTO provides a topic for the second GD, after which the same process is repeated. The group does not need to reach a decision in this instance.

2. Group Planning Exercise (GPE)

Using a map of the location, the GTO describes a situation where there are a number of issues. The candidates then have 10 minutes to write their solutions using all of their resources, including their group. The group then confers a strategy for resolving the issues, which is then described by one of the participants.

3. Progressive Group Task (PGT)

This challenge consists of four different obstacle courses, each of which gets harder as it goes along. The group is expected to proceed and take on these buildings utilizing their available aid, such as a rope, plank, balli, etc. There is also a load that needs to be carried. The group is required to abide by all GTO guidelines, which include:

(a) Rule of Color

  • White refers to both people and things.
  • Blue denotes a guy only.
  • Red is off-limits to everyone.

(b) The ground is off-limits to everyone.

(c) Rigidity Rule: Helping materials may be attached to the structures but not to one another.

(d) Rule Of Infinity: The start and end lines extend to infinity i.e can’t be crossed directly 

(e) Distance Rule: No distance greater than  4 feet can be jumped.

4. Group Obstacle Race (GOR)/ Snake Race

A sprint across four obstacles, including a single ramp jump, eight-shaped bars, a 10-foot wall, a double wall, a spider web, and an enormous slide, is one of the most enjoyable activities in the entire procedure. Red should not be touched by either a snake or my man, according to the guidelines. When navigating obstacles, the snake must be handled by a minimum of three people, and the GTO may apply a time penalty for infractions.

5. Half Group Task (HGT)

Similar to PGT but with only two people in the group and one obstacle to overcome.

SSB Interview Day 4: Personal Interview

1. Lecturette

The lecturette is a test of your self-assurance in front of a group of onlookers. Each officer is responsible for leading his men, inspiring them, and explaining the strategy. For this, you need to speak and sing with assurance. The SSB panel administers a test in GTO known as the lectures to verify all of these.

2. Individual Obstacles (IO)

The candidate must successfully navigate all 10 obstacles, each of which will provide a different score as displayed on them. The candidate may repeat the challenges, but only once he has cleared all 10. The 10 tasks are shown below with their respective scores.

3. Command Task (CT)

The GTO calls each task candidate, in turn, selecting them at random, before asking them a series of questions and outlining a task resembling the PGT. Then he requests that the commander who is up for the job contact two of his team members as subordinates to assist him in getting past the obstruction.

4. Final Group Task (FGT)

As suggested by the name, the entire group is again given one obstacle that is comparable to PGT, which they must clear together.

5. Personal Interview (PI)

Any of the three days, following the conclusion of the examinations that day, may be used for the personal interview. The interviewing officer asks the student a variety of questions about his family, academics, involvement in sports and extracurricular activities, hobbies and interests, responsibilities, and general knowledge including knowledge of the forces, personal life, etc. based on information provided by the student in his PIQ (Personal Information Questionnaire). 

The average interview lasts for 40 minutes, while some may go for an hour or even just 5 minutes.

SSBDay 5: Conference Day

The Final Day is the Conference Day in the 5-Day ACC. The assessor gives a final address before the conference of aspirants gets underway. All the officers who evaluated the Aspirants the previous days attend a board session that is held. Each assessor talks amongst themselves about a candidate's suitability.

The committee then makes recommendations after each Aspirant makes an individual appearance before the board and their overall evaluation is described. Situations are presented to the borderline Aspirants, and a group decision is made. The shortlisted applicants are kept on after the outcome is revealed for additional medical exams.

SSB Marking System-

Pertaining to the SSB Marking System, each of the three assessors will evaluate the medical test, the group task, and the personal interview for a total of 300 marks (PI). A minimum score of 90 is required from each assessor. The SSB consists of 900 total points. It Is Also Divided Into 4 Parts (Psychology, GTO, Interview, And Conference Round), Giving Each Test Phase 900/4=225 Marks. Out of these 225 marks, you must receive at least 90 in order for either of the assessors to say "Yes," while scoring less than 90 simply results in a "No."

Screening, psychological tests, GTO tasks, and a personal interview are all part of the initial four days of the SSB interview process. In this case, you would need to pass with at least 90*3= 270 marks. For Example -

1) One applicant receives 80 points for the interview, 70 for the GTO, and 75 for the psychological test. The final score is 225 points.

2) A different contender receives a total of 250 out of the necessary 270 marks. Thus, the significance of the conference round is now apparent. If your marks are higher than 240, the conference round will determine whether or not you are recommended.

Complete Marking Scheme For ACC SSB

A minimum of 90 points must be obtained from each assessor. SSB has a total of 900 points. It is then divided into four parts (psychology, GTO, interview, and conference round), with each test phase receiving 900/4=225 marks.
